Do musicians resent backing up vocal artists and playing under their name, foregoing their own recognition?

I always wonder how bands must feel when people like Gwen Stefani and Fergi leave their bands behind, only to hire guys to replace them. But, maybe they would still be playing clubs if it hadn't been for the solo act. Is it preferable to give up on fame and enjoy the steady pay check of a freelance musician?
