What was the best thing about console TVs?

Remember our family paying about $900 for one back in the late 60's and justifying the price because it was a nice piece of furniture. Picture tube was low to the floor, not sitting up high like televisions today. We had a crocheted doily and a small lamp on the top of it, and our cat would jump up and sleep there, because it was warm.
